Bringing a wide-ranging essay to film
Steve Biddulph’s essay explores how boys become men, moving from personal experiences of fatherhood and the importance of guidance to the wider consequences for relationships, women and society.
For Perspective, I condensed his long-form article into a ten-minute film, preserving his first-person voice and the breadth of his argument. The challenge was to find a visual approach that could accommodate the essay’s shifting emotional range, from personal reflection to difficult social questions and the possibility of change.
I brought together footage that reflected the experiences he describes, alongside material about the people and organisations mentioned in the article. Through the edit, I sought to connect the personal stories with the wider issues he raises, while keeping his words at the centre.
“I could not have imagined a better treatment of the words into such a rich and moving visual experience. Your treatment of my work is an author’s dream.”
